Our first meeting on October 4th will begin our season by welcoming Seattle Port Commissioner John Creighton, speaking on “The State of the Port”.  

 

John was elected to the Seattle Port Commission in November 2005 and is the longest serving Commissioner currently in office. During his time on the Commission he has served three times as Commission President, and on the audit and strategic planning committees of the Commission. As commissioner, John has focused on keeping the Port strong as a jobs creation engine while increasing the agency’s commitment to the environment and making it a more accountable, socially responsible public agency. Before becoming a commissioner, John worked as a lawyer specializing in complex international transactions in the port cities of Singapore, Helsinki and Istanbul prior to returning home and establishing his own practice. This luncheon will take place at the Wells Fargo Center at 999 3rd Ave, Suite 700, Seattle, WA.

Immutable infrastructure is a practice for infrastructure management that continues to grow in popularity due to the advent of cloud computer and containerization. DJ Enriquez, who leads the DevOps efforts at Seattle-bred startup, Glympse, will share tips on how this can be achieved in an AWS environment using technologies like cloud-init, S3, HashiCorp’s Consul and your favorite CI tool, whatever that may be. Gone are the days where servers need maintenance, if an issue exists, we simply terminate the instance and let immutability carry us into the future.

Synergy Tech Startup Contest
Synergy Tech Startup Contest for Startups from Seattle and the Greater Pacific Northwest has been initiated and applications are open from February 9th. Finals will be held live from 3:00 PM to 5:30 PM on April 5, 2017, in SURF Incubator, 999 Third Ave, Suite 700, Seattle. The contest is designed to offer a unique Synergy experience: the winner will receive $25,000 in software development services to take their project to the next level. Teri Radichel helped Capital One move production workloads to the cloud as part of the initial core Cloud Engineering and Operations teams. She also worked on and with the Security Operations team to set up AWS networking for over 70 VPCs. She is now a Cloud Architect at WatchGuard Technologies helping WatchGuard make the move. Learn some strategies that will help you if you are: trying to convince your company move to the cloud, moving to the cloud, in need of scalable DevOps, trying to pick the right AWS services and manage the balance between security and innovation.
 
Kolby Allen from WatchGuard Technologies will be showing us how to make CloudFormation templates more manageable. He will also give strategies for handling conRguration changes that might make your life easier and your EC2 instances and Docker containers more secure via immutable infrastructure.
